How Long Do Eyelashes Take to Grow Back? The Lash Growth Cycle

Losing a few eyelashes every day is normal. Like the hair on your head, each lash grows, rests and eventually falls out, and a new one starts in the same follicle. Lashes lost to rubbing, a curler accident, extensions or makeup removal usually come back too, but not overnight.

This guide explains the lash growth cycle, roughly how long regrowth takes, everyday habits that can damage lashes, and signs that lash loss should be checked by a doctor. It ends with how to follow regrowth with photos in LashLog.

A note first

This article is general information, not medical advice. The time frames below are commonly cited ranges and vary from person to person. Sudden or patchy lash loss, loss of eyebrow or other hair, or redness, swelling, itching or pain around the eyes should be checked by a doctor or eye specialist.

The three phases of lash growth

Every lash is at one of three stages, and the lashes on one eyelid are all at different points in the cycle, which is why you never lose them all at once:

  1. Growth (anagen): the lash actively grows. For eyelashes this phase is short compared with scalp hair, often quoted as around 30 to 45 days, which is one reason lashes stay short.
  2. Transition (catagen): growth stops and the follicle shrinks, typically over a couple of weeks. A lash lost now is not replaced until the follicle moves on.
  3. Rest (telogen): the lash stays in place, at full length, for several months before it is shed and a new one begins to grow. Many sources put this phase at roughly four to nine months.

Taken together, the full cycle for one lash is commonly described as lasting several months to around a year.

How long regrowth takes

When a lash falls out at the end of its natural cycle, a new one is usually already on its way. When a lash is pulled out early, the follicle may need to go through the rest of the cycle first. That is why regrowth is usually described in weeks to months rather than days, with many sources suggesting roughly six to eight weeks for a new lash to reach full length, and longer for a whole row to look fully even again.

Because the change is so gradual, it is very hard to notice in a mirror from day to day. Photos taken under the same conditions a few weeks apart are a much more honest way to see it.

Everyday habits that can damage lashes

Gentle removal, clean tools and giving lashes breaks from extensions are the habits most often recommended.

A word on lash serums

Lash serums are sold with a wide range of claims, and their ingredients differ a lot. Some prescription eye medicines are known to affect lash growth and are only available through a doctor because of possible side effects. With any product applied near the eyes, follow the instructions, do a patch test where advised, and stop using it if your eyes become irritated.

When to see a doctor

Lash loss is worth checking with a professional if it is sudden or patchy, if lashes do not seem to grow back after a few months, if you are also losing eyebrow or scalp hair, or if your eyelids are red, swollen, crusty, itchy or sore. Eyelid inflammation, thyroid problems, some skin conditions and certain medicines can all affect lashes. Repeatedly pulling out lashes is also something a doctor can help with.

Following regrowth in LashLog

LashLog is built for this kind of slow change:

  1. Open the camera screen and photograph the left eye and then the right eye, or upload existing pictures.
  2. Use the overlay slider to show your previous photo faintly over the camera view, so the angle and distance match.
  3. Rate length, density, curl, strength and overall satisfaction from 1 to 5 stars and add a note, for example "extensions removed".
  4. Every few weeks, open the compare screen and put two dates side by side or drag the slider between them. The quick picks such as one month apart make this easy.
  5. Play a timelapse of one eye, and check the progress screen for your rating trends.

LashLog only organises your own photos and ratings. It does not measure lashes or judge any product. On the web, photos stay in this browser and there are no reminders; the iPhone and Android apps can remind you to take photos. For photo tips, see how to take eyelash progress photos.
