CalcFlow - Mental Math Drills
CalcFlow is a calculation drill for keeping mental arithmetic sharp. It mixes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems and shows them one at a time with a large on-screen number pad, so you can practise with a mouse, a touch screen or your keyboard.
There are three ways to practise. Endless Mode has no time limit and is good for warming up. Time Attack gives you one, three or five minutes to answer as many problems as you can. Daily 20 is a fixed set of twenty problems for each day — the same day always produces the same set — which makes it easy to build a short daily habit.
Difficulty adjusts itself: after every twenty answers CalcFlow looks at your recent accuracy and moves the level up when you are getting more than 80% right, or down when you are below 50%. The home screen shows your total problems, accuracy and how many days in a row you have practised.
The app runs entirely in your browser. What you enter is saved only on this device.
How to use CalcFlow
- Choose a mode. On the home screen tap Endless Mode, Time Attack or Daily 20. The bar at the top shows your total problems solved, overall accuracy and your current streak in days.
- Answer with the number pad. Type the answer with the on-screen keys or your keyboard. With auto-submit on, the answer is checked as soon as you have typed as many digits as the correct answer has, so there is no need to press Enter.
- Learn from mistakes. A correct answer flashes green and the next problem appears straight away; a wrong one is shown a little longer so you can see what went wrong. Press C to clear what you have typed.
- Try a Time Attack. Pick one, three or five minutes. The countdown starts immediately; answer as many problems as you can before it reaches zero, then review your score and accuracy.
- Complete today's Daily 20. Work through the twenty problems for today. The counter at the top shows your progress and the number correct so far. Come back tomorrow for a new set.
- Check your statistics. Tap the chart icon at the top right to see total problems, correct answers and accuracy, counts for today, this week and this month, and a chart of accuracy by operation.
Features
- Mixed addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems
- Endless Mode without a time limit
- Time Attack with 1, 3 or 5 minutes
- Daily 20: a set of 20 problems generated from the date, so it stays the same all day
- Automatic difficulty: level up above 80% accuracy, down below 50%, over the last 20 answers
- Large number pad with auto-submit; keyboard input also works
- Statistics: overall accuracy, today, this week, this month and accuracy by operation
- Practice streak counted in days
How to get faster at mental arithmetic
Accuracy first, then speed
Speed in mental maths comes from recognising patterns you have already practised, not from rushing. If you guess, you also practise wrong answers. Aim for accuracy above about 90% at a comfortable pace, and let the time come down naturally. CalcFlow's automatic difficulty follows the same idea: it only raises the level when you are getting most problems right.
Useful strategies for each operation
Addition: add from the left. For 47 + 38, add the tens (40 + 30 = 70), then the ones (7 + 8 = 15), and combine to get 85. Another approach is to make a round number: 47 + 38 is the same as 50 + 35.
Subtraction: count up instead of down. For 83 − 46, go from 46 to 50 (4), then to 80 (30), then to 83 (3): 4 + 30 + 3 = 37. Or subtract a round number and adjust: 83 − 50 = 33, then add back 4.
Multiplication: know the times tables to 12 × 12 by heart — they are the building blocks of everything else. For larger numbers, split one factor: 14 × 7 = 10 × 7 + 4 × 7 = 70 + 28 = 98. Doubling and halving also helps: 16 × 5 is the same as 8 × 10.
Division: think of it as a multiplication with a missing factor. 72 ÷ 8 asks "8 times what is 72?" — so division practice is really times-table practice in reverse.
Short, regular practice beats long sessions
Five to ten minutes a day is more effective than an hour once a week, because recall gets stronger each time you retrieve a fact after a gap. A fixed routine — for example Daily 20 with your morning coffee, or one three-minute Time Attack before homework — is easier to keep than vague plans to practise more.
Mix the operations. Practising only one type of problem feels easier but transfers less well than a mixed set, where you also have to decide which strategy to use. That is why CalcFlow mixes all four operations by default.
For parents and teachers
Children usually progress best when the level is just slightly challenging. Encourage them to say the strategy out loud now and then ("I made ten first") and celebrate streaks and accuracy rather than raw speed. If a child is regularly below 50%, step back to easier problems — CalcFlow will do this automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Is CalcFlow free in the browser?
Yes. All three modes and the statistics work without an account or installation.
Where are my results stored?
Only in this browser on this device (its built-in storage). Nothing is uploaded. Clearing site data for this website, or using a private window, removes your history, level and streak.
Can I choose which operations to practise?
Not in the web version. Problems mix addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Why did the problems get harder (or easier)?
After every twenty answers CalcFlow checks your accuracy over the last twenty. Above 80% the level goes up; below 50% it goes down. Higher levels use larger numbers and bigger times tables.
Does Daily 20 change if I reopen it?
No. The set is generated from the date (and your current level), so it is the same each time you open it on that day. A new set appears the next day.
How is the web version different from the phone app?
The drills and statistics are the same. The iPhone and Android app can vibrate on answers and offers an optional ad-free upgrade; purchases are not available on the web. Progress is not shared between the app and the browser.
Limitations of the web version
- History, level and streak are stored only in this browser and are not synced
- Vibration feedback depends on the browser and device and is not available on most computers
- In-app purchases are not offered on the web
