SplitEasy - Bill Split & Tip Calculator

SplitEasy answers the question that comes up at the end of every shared meal: how much does each of us owe? Type the total on the bill, enter how many people are paying, add a tip or tax percentage if you need one, and the amount per person appears straight away. There is no button to press and no formula to remember.

It is meant for dinners with friends, team lunches, bar tabs, office parties and shared costs on a trip, where one person usually pays and everyone else settles up afterwards. If you split with the same people often, you can save them as a group with their names, then pick the group instead of counting heads each time.

Each share is rounded up to a whole unit of currency, so nobody deals with small change and the person who paid is never short. You can save a result to the history list for the current visit or share it as a short text message.

The app runs entirely in your browser. What you enter is saved only on this device.

How to use SplitEasy

  1. Enter the total. On the Calculate tab, type the bill amount in Total Amount. The currency code shown next to the result is picked from your browser's region (for example USD or EUR); it is a label only and no conversion is done.
  2. Set the number of people. Type the number of people sharing the bill. At least two are needed before a result is shown. If you have saved groups, tap a group chip instead and its member count is filled in for you; the clear icon removes the group again.
  3. Add tip and tax if needed. Enter a tip percentage and a tax percentage, or leave them empty. Both are calculated on the amount you typed, then added to it to give the total including tip and tax.
  4. Read the result. The total with tip and tax and the amount per person update as you type. The per-person amount is rounded up to the next whole number.
  5. Save or share. Tap Save to give the calculation a title (the group name or today's date is suggested) and add it to History. Tap Share to send the result as text; if sharing is not available, the result is copied to the clipboard.
  6. Create a group. Open the Groups tab and tap the + button. Enter a group name, add each member's name, and save. A group needs a name and at least two members.
  7. Split within a group. On a group card, tap the calculator icon to open a quick split for that group with total, tip and tax fields. It shows the per-person amount and the actual total that will be collected.
  8. Review the history. The History tab lists saved calculations, newest first. Tap one to see the details, rename it or delete it, or use the sweep icon to clear the whole list.

How to split a bill fairly

Start from the right total

Before dividing anything, decide which number you are splitting. On many receipts the printed total already includes sales tax or VAT, and in some places a service charge is added automatically. If tax is already in the figure, leave the tax field empty; otherwise you will count it twice. Likewise, if a service charge is printed on the bill, a separate tip is usually optional rather than expected.

In the United States and Canada, menu prices normally exclude sales tax, so the tax appears as a separate line at the end. In most of Europe, Japan and Australia, prices already include tax. When you travel, glance at the bottom of the receipt before reaching for a tip or tax percentage.

Tipping conventions differ by country

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, table-service restaurants commonly receive around 15 to 20 percent. In the UK a service charge of about 12.5 percent is often added to the bill. In much of continental Europe people round up or leave a small amount, and in Japan tipping is generally not expected. When unsure, ask what is usual locally.

Some people calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount and some on the total. SplitEasy applies both percentages to the amount you type, which is the same as tipping on the pre-tax subtotal when you enter that subtotal.

Equal split or itemized split

An equal split is quick and works well when everyone ordered roughly the same. It becomes less fair when one person had only a salad and another ordered steak and several drinks. In that case, a common compromise is to take the expensive extras off the top, have those people pay for them directly, and split the shared remainder equally. For a trip, it often helps to split shared costs such as accommodation and fuel equally and keep personal purchases separate.

Why round up

When a total does not divide evenly, someone ends up covering the leftover cents. Rounding each share up to a whole amount avoids awkward change and makes sure the person who paid is fully covered. The trade-off is that the group may collect a little more than the bill; with five people, it can be up to almost five units of currency over. Many groups simply treat the surplus as part of the tip. If precision matters, compare the actual total collected with the bill before settling up.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my data stored?

Groups are saved only in this browser on this device, using the browser's local storage. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server. Clearing your browser data, or using a private window, removes them, and they do not move to another browser or device.

Why did my history disappear after I reloaded the page?

Saved calculations are kept for the current visit only. Reloading or closing the page clears the History list. Your groups are kept, because they are stored in the browser.

Why is the per-person amount a whole number?

SplitEasy rounds each share up to the next whole unit so the bill is always fully covered without small change. The total collected can therefore be slightly higher than the bill.

Which currency does it use?

The currency code is chosen from your browser's language and region settings, with USD as the fallback. It is only a label; the app does not convert between currencies, so any currency works as long as you type the amount in it.

How is the tip calculated?

The tip and tax percentages are each applied to the amount you enter and then added to it. If your receipt total already includes tax, leave the tax field empty.

How is this different from the phone app?

The calculator, groups and history work the same way. The iPhone and Android apps are installed on the phone and work offline as a normal app, and they offer an optional ad-free purchase, which is not available on the web.
